Community

The mailing lists, IRC channels, and forums where Alpha/Linux users and developers meet today. Each distribution's own lists and channels are also described under Distributions, and the lists and newsgroups of the past under Community History.

Mailing lists

The Alpha/Linux kernel mailing list is linux-alpha@vger.kernel.org, hosted at vger.kernel.org. It is also the place for general questions about Linux on Alpha. A question is easier to answer when it gives the system model, the distribution and kernel version, and the output of the SRM show config command or the kernel log; see Kernel: Reporting bugs.

  • Subscribe: send an email to linux-alpha+subscribe@vger.kernel.org; the subject and body are ignored.
  • Daily digest: subscribe with linux-alpha+subscribe-digest@vger.kernel.org instead.
  • Unsubscribe: send an email to linux-alpha+unsubscribe@vger.kernel.org.
  • NNTP: the list can be read at nntp://nntp.lore.kernel.org.
  • Archives: lore.kernel.org, from April 2002, and marc.info, from May 1998.

Gentoo and Debian each have an Alpha mailing list: gentoo-alpha and debian-alpha.

The NetBSD Alpha and OpenBSD Alpha mailing lists also carry Alpha hardware and porting information.

The lists that carried most of the port's history, among them Red Hat's axp-list and the lists hosted on alphalinux.org, are gone, as are the Alpha newsgroups. Their archives are described in Community History.

IRC

General Alpha discussion takes place in #alpha on Libera.Chat, and Gentoo's Alpha port uses #gentoo-alpha on the same network.

Forums

The alphalinux organization on GitHub hosts GitHub Discussions for questions, announcements, and general discussion of Linux on Alpha.

Gentoo has a Gentoo on Alternative Architectures forum.

Issue tracker

Known problems that affect Linux on Alpha across projects are tracked in alphalinux/issues on GitHub. How to report a bug is described under Bugs.

The port's own tools, among them aboot and MILO, and the mailing list archives cited throughout this wiki, are kept in the alphalinux organization on GitHub.
