Takara is the codename of Digital's 21164 single board computer in the PICMG (PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group) form factor, part of the Modular Computing Components (DMCC) line that Digital sold to OEMs for use with passive PCI backplanes. 1) 2) Digital's Alpha engineer for Linux described it as a "DEC TOEM board". 3) Compaq sold the OEM division to SMART Modular Technologies in July 1999; Solectron bought SMART Modular about three weeks before October 1999 and also bought Force Computers. 4) The Eiger is its 21264 counterpart.
The PCI interrupts arrive through a master interrupt register at I/O port 0x500. On the default backplane PCI devices 1, 2, and 3 sit at slots 20, 19, and 18, and jumpers can move them to slots 8, 7, and 6. 15)
The single flash ROM holds either SRM, for Tru64 UNIX and OpenVMS, or AlphaBIOS, for Windows NT; programming one console overwrites the other. 16) Digital's firmware FTP directory had separate dmcc21064a, dmcc21164, and dmcc21164a directories. 17) A Force Flexor A164/500 reported SRM V5.7-9. 18)
After an SRM update the console may appear on the COM1 serial port instead of the graphics card. Connect a terminal at 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, and 1 stop bit, and run set console graphics. 19)
The kernel supports the Takara with CONFIG_ALPHA_TAKARA (or a generic kernel), which selects the EV56 code and offers the choice of booting from SRM or from MILO. 20) Linux 6.10 removed support for processors older than the EV56 (21164A), so only 21164A boards such as the A164/500 remain supported. No report of a current kernel on a Takara has been found, and the board has a history of boot problems.
takara_swizzle dereferencing a null pointer, 29) and in June 2004 said kernels through 2.6.6 still panicked and that he had submitted a patch. 30) The current takara_swizzle returns at once for a device on the root bus, before it reads dev→bus→self. 31) Whether that is the patch, and when it went in, has not been established.Digital announced its Alpha PICMG backplane systems and single board computers in April 1996. 35) An EV56 Takara was still awaited in June 1997 and was orderable by July, when it was described as the PICMG CPU card that had won best of show at the computer telephony show. 36) Compaq sold the OEM group to SMART Modular Technologies in July 1999. Solectron bought SMART Modular about three weeks before 9 October and had also just bought Force Computers, 37) and the boards were later sold under the Force name. 38)
