The instructions for making a "bootable" cd are just for the i386
paltform. Alpha/Sparc don't need any trickery to boot from a cd. I fully
admit I'm a GUI slave when it comes to burning CD's, I use xcdroast. I
download the alpha directory (and everything in it) by using ncftp. go
to the directory where you see the alpha directory, type 'bin', then
type 'get alpha.tar' (some mirrors allow 'alpha.tar.gz').
A few hours later, you have alpha.tar on your machine. untar it
someplace and use the alpha directory as the root of the cd. All the
symlinks and permissions are preserved when it's tar'ed. xcdroast is
easy and quick. Give it a try.
